The A10X Brief №8

Anthropic named the job, and you cannot apply

FROM: A10X FIELD DESKTO: FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERSRE: BRIEF №8 · THREE MOVESDATE: OCTOBER 2026 · WK 41

Last week a major lab put $100 million behind the role this brief exists for. Anthropic's Claude Frontier Academy will train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027, and it is nomination only. The same week I read every FDE posting at two companies that show where the jobs actually are: Wonderful, hiring one FDE per country in 37 countries and none in the US, and Palantir, which invented the title and now pays a lower base ceiling than most companies that copied it. Three items, one theme: the bar is getting public, and the open path runs through practice, not a badge.

Anthropic will train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers, by nomination only

What changed. On 2026-10-02 Anthropic announced Claude Frontier Academy: "Backed by a $100 million commitment, Anthropic aims to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers (FDEs) by the end of 2027." Participation is by nomination; an organization asks its Anthropic account team or partner manager. First cohorts come from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, running in San Francisco, New York and London. Phase one is in person and ends with a graded practical on a new scenario, which earns the Claude Resident Engineer badge. Phase two is a 12-week residency leading a real Claude use case at the engineer's own company, then a second assessment for the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge, the first expected in early 2027.

Why it matters to an FDE. Frontier Deployed Engineer and Forward Deployed Engineer are the same job with the same abbreviation, so search both titles from now on. The bigger change is that a major lab has now described the bar in public: choose the use case, run the deployment through security review to handover, and get graded on a scenario you have not seen. Expect more hiring loops to borrow that shape. Most engineers who want this job will not be nominated, because their employer has no Anthropic account team. They can still build the same evidence.

Run the Academy's stages against one project you have shipped: the use case you chose and what you left out, what you asked in discovery, the eval that caught a real failure, what the security review covered, and who runs it now that you are gone. Write one line per stage. The blank lines are your prep list. If you want a scenario you have not seen, the free 60-minute case is on a10x.dev/arena.
hiring

Wonderful is hiring an FDE in 37 countries, and none in the US

What changed. Wonderful, an AI agent company headquartered in Tel Aviv, had 117 open roles on its Ashby board when I read them on 2026-10-03. 38 are titled Forward Deployed Engineer, across 37 locations including Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Germany, South Africa, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. In 28 of those locations it is also hiring a Deployment Strategist, so 67 of the 117 openings are one of those two jobs. All 67 sit in the Sales and Marketing department; R&D has 3 openings. None of the 117 is in the United States, none publishes a pay range, and all 38 FDE postings ask for 5+ years building software.

Why it matters to an FDE. Most FDE coverage is about San Francisco and New York. This is a different version of the job: a local hire, roughly one per country, who works with customers in their own time zone and language. If you are a senior engineer outside the US, this role is being built where you already live. The department line matters too. The work is engineering, but the org chart puts it next to sales, so the interview will test how you handle a customer as much as how you write code.

If you are outside the US, search the live board for your country and read one posting end to end. Then write the three-sentence answer to the question every customer-side loop asks in some form: tell me about a time a customer wanted something you should not build. If you do not have that story yet, the case kit on GitHub gives you three cases to practice it on.
comp

Palantir invented the title, and now pays a lower base ceiling than the companies that copied it

What changed. Palantir's Lever board lists 79 FDE postings: 46 experienced, 13 new grad, 20 internships. 42 of the 79 titles name a government, intelligence, defense or NATO program, and 53 postings mention a security clearance. US base pay from the postings: experienced FDSE $135K to $200K, new grad $135K to $145K, the same floor; Palantir adds that total comp may include stock and a sign-on bonus. Outside the US, 18 of 19 experienced postings publish no range. On our board, 112 FDE roles at other companies publish a US dollar range, and 91 of them top out above $200K.

Why it matters to an FDE. Two readings depending on where you are. Early in your career, Palantir is hiring FDEs straight out of school right now (33 new grad and intern openings) at the same base floor as its experienced hires, which almost nobody else offers. Senior, the base ceiling is lower than most of the market, so compare offers on base first and price the stock separately. And if you do not want clearance work, filter it out early: it is more than half of Palantir's FDE titles.

Before your next comp conversation, pull three published ranges for the same title from the live board, not from a salary site, and write down the median ceiling. Walk in with that number and the posting it came from. A range a company published itself is much harder to argue with than one you heard.

The through-line

A lab badge, a 37-country build-out and a public pay band all point the same way: the FDE role is getting a public standard. You cannot wait for a nomination to meet it. Practice on cases you have not seen, keep one real deployment story ready, and use the numbers companies publish themselves.

See you next Monday.
