Three items this week, and each one is a number that reads differently once you open the posting it came from. A top-paying FDE role whose headline range mixes three locations. Three FDE employers we re-read on 28 October, with very different rules on where you sit. And a report that FDE postings in India grew 19-fold, set against what our own board shows for India.
compOne FDE posting, three pay ranges. The top one is in another country
What changed. On 2026-10-28 Cohere posted a Forward Deployed Engineer, Inference role, located in the United States. Its pay headline reads $240K to $415K. Under it sit three ranges: California, New York and Washington $265K to $325K; the rest of the US $240K to $295K; Canada $340K to $415K. So the $415K is the Canada range, not a US one. It is marked as US dollars, but it sits above both US ranges, and Cohere's other US FDE posting, Agentic Platform, prices its Canada range in Canadian dollars (CA$175K to CA$385K). Our own board showed $415K as its top base for a few hours on 29 October before we caught it. The role itself is infrastructure work: serving models inside the customer's own infrastructure, prefill and decode performance, vLLM or TensorRT-LLM, Kubernetes across clusters, 8+ years.
Why it matters to an FDE. A headline range on a posting with several locations is the lowest and highest number across all of them. Your number is the range for where you would sit, and it can be $90K lower than the headline. If you compare offers or ask for a raise using the headline, you start the conversation with a number they never budgeted for you.
Before you quote a range, open the pay section of the posting and find the line for your state or country. If you could work from more than one place, ask the recruiter which range the role is budgeted in. What changed. We re-read the hiring boards of three companies that hire FDEs in different ways. Ode, which Anthropic launched in July with Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman: 14 open roles, and every one that states a work arrangement (13 of 14) says 4 days in person, Fridays remote, in San Francisco, New York or Raleigh-Durham. DeployCo, OpenAI's deployment company: 30 open roles; the US FDE is New York or San Francisco, 3 days a week in the office, up to 50% travel, $170K to $400K plus equity, and it asks for 4+ years of engineering. Wonderful: 126 open roles, 39 of them titled Forward Deployed Engineer across 38 markets, none in the US, and 0 of the 126 publish pay.
Why it matters to an FDE. The same title means three different jobs. Ode wants you in a room four days a week. DeployCo pays in a wide band and can have you travelling up to half the time. Wonderful is the widest door into FDE work outside the US, and you will learn the pay only on a call. Know which of these you can live with before you spend a weekend on a take-home.

What changed. On 2026-10-14 Indeed reported that FDE job postings in India rose nearly 19-fold year on year in June 2026, and stayed about 16 times higher in July and over 6 times higher in August. It named Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai, and said the roles span tech companies, consulting firms, startups and AI businesses. It did not say how many postings that is. On 29 October our board listed 331 FDE roles in its default view, and 8 are in India. Counting the broader matches, there are 18 India roles at 8 companies: Accenture 6, Databricks 3, Harness 2, Turing 2, Warner Music Group 2, and one each at Avoca, Observe.AI and HackerRank. None of the 18 publishes pay.
Why it matters to an FDE. A 19-fold rise from a small base can still be a small number, and most of it sits outside the AI labs. On our board none of the 18 India roles is at OpenAI, Anthropic or Cohere. The India doors are a services firm that trains its own FDEs, the India offices of product companies, and a few remote roles: Databricks lists two FDE roles as Remote, India, one of them Staff level.
If you are in India, choose your door first. For a services firm, lead with delivery for clients. For a product company's India office, lead with something you shipped that a customer used. Ask for the pay range on the first call, because no posting gives one. The India filter is on the live board.The through-line
