FROM: A10X FIELD DESKTO: FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERSRE: BRIEF №10 · THREE MOVESDATE: OCTOBER 2026 · WK 43
On 15 October CNBC published Lightcast's count of FDE hiring. US postings went from fewer than 200 in 2023 to more than 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026, and the four employers posting the most are Deloitte, Accenture, Google and KPMG. Three of those four are consulting firms. Two days earlier Accenture and Workday launched a joint FDE program for HR and finance. The third item puts the reported median salary next to the 127 published ranges on our board. Three items, one theme: the biggest employers say they cannot hire enough experienced FDEs, so they train senior engineers into the job.
marketUS FDE postings passed 7,300 this year, and consulting firms post the most
What changed. On 2026-10-15 CNBC published Lightcast data on the role. US job postings for FDEs went from fewer than 200 in 2023 to about 1,200 in 2025 and more than 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026. The median advertised salary over that period was $195,456, up 40% from 2023. The four biggest posters were Deloitte with 872, Accenture 688, Google 499 and KPMG 447. Lightcast notes these are advertised positions, not completed hires. Its head of global research, Elena Magrini, said the role "shares roughly half of its skills with software engineering".
Why it matters to an FDE. Most FDE coverage, ours included, is about AI labs and startups. By posting count, the biggest buyers of FDEs are firms that staff engineers on client work. None of those four is on our board today: it reads the job boards of 85 companies, most of them AI companies. I am telling you so you do not read our 290 roles as the whole market. The skills line matters too. If half the job is the software engineering you already do, the half to prepare is the other one: the customer, the business and the deployment.
Search the Deloitte, Accenture and KPMG career sites for "forward deployed" and read one posting end to end. Mark each line you could back with a project you have shipped, and each line you could not. The second list is your prep list.hiringAccenture says it cannot recruit enough FDEs, so it trains them in 30 to 90 days
What changed. In the same CNBC piece, Ram Ramalingam, who leads FDE and software and platform engineering at Accenture, said: "The reality is that experienced FDEs cannot simply be recruited at the scale clients need." Accenture and Google Cloud are building a 1,000-person FDE workforce, partly by retraining experienced software engineers. Depending on background, the training and onboarding can take 30 to 90 days, and it is built for engineers with substantial experience, not beginners. On 2026-10-13 Accenture and Workday announced a joint FDE program: engineers work with client HR and finance teams to put Workday's agents into production inside each client's existing processes, data, policies and controls. Workday's CEO, Aneel Bhusri: "When AI is helping run payroll and close the books, almost right isn't good enough."
Why it matters to an FDE. This is the path for a senior engineer who has not done the job yet. The biggest hirers say out loud that they take experienced engineers and add the deployment half. Caylent's CEO, Val Henderson, named the hard part in the same article: "The hardest thing to teach is the customer EQ, without question." The Workday line sets the bar. On payroll and the books, an agent that is right most of the time is a failed deployment, so the interview will ask how you would know it is right before it goes live.
Pick one process where almost right fails: payroll, an invoice, a refund. Write the bar it has to meet before go-live, the eval that proves it, and who signs off. One page. That answers the question a consulting loop will ask about a program like Workday's, and it works in any FDE loop. If you want to be graded on a customer you have not met, the free case is on a10x.dev/arena.compThe reported median is $195K, and most published bands run through it
What changed. On 2026-10-18 our live board listed 290 FDE roles at 85 companies. 127 publish a US dollar range. The middle of those ranges runs from $170K at the bottom to $245K at the top. 91 of the 127 bands start below Lightcast's $195,456 median and end above it. 13 top out below it and 23 start above it. Two roles go up to $400K: Baseten, FDE (Training), $200K to $400K, and Giga, Senior / Staff FDE, $180K to $400K. 163 roles publish no US range.
Why it matters to an FDE. A median is a headline number. In a negotiation the number that matters is the band for the exact title in front of you, and most bands start below $195K and end above it. Where you land inside the band depends on the level they hire you at and on what you can show them. The $400K offers exist, but only two of 290 roles print it.
Before your next recruiter call, find the band for the exact title on the live board or in the posting. If the company publishes none, ask for it in the first call. It is a normal question, and the answer tells you which level they have in mind. The through-line
The biggest FDE employers are not waiting for finished FDEs. They take senior engineers and train the half that is not code: the customer, the business and the bar for going live. That half can be learned, and it is the half to practise.
See you next Monday.
